Where Gharb Soheil is
Gharb Soheil is a village on the west bank of the Nile, upstream from Aswan and opposite the island of Soheil. It is a place where people live, and many of the visitor services there are run from family homes and guesthouses. Do not confuse it with Sehel, an island village of its own, or with Gharb Aswan north of the city. The villages on Elephantine, Koti and Siou, are covered on the Elephantine page.
There is no single visitor product called the Nubian village with one central office. Guesthouses, meals, henna painting and boat rides are offered separately. This is an independent guide, not run by a village association, a guesthouse or any authority.

By boat or by road
Both ways are offered. The exact approach depends on where in the village you are going.
| Way | What is published | Ask before you go |
|---|---|---|
| Boat | About 40 minutes upstream from Aswan, as a secondary estimate from August 2026 | Which pier, the price, and whether the trip is a motor or a sailing trip |
| Road | An operator guide updated in September 2026 describes access by car or tuk-tuk along the west bank | The route and the time, which differ by destination |
| Transfer | Some providers offer transfers to Gharb Soheil | Access differs by road and by guesthouse, so confirm the exact stop |
The boat time is a guide, not a promise for every boat, pier or sailing trip. Do not rely on a fixed road time. Ask your host or provider which route fits your stop.

What visitors can arrange
Services are offered by individual hosts and are paid for one by one.
Guesthouses and meals
Guesthouses in and around Gharb Soheil offer rooms and meals. Some list their address on an island in the area, so check where your guesthouse is and how you reach it. A guesthouse is a home and a business, not a stage.
Where to stay →Henna painting
Henna painting is offered to visitors. It is not part of a village visit by default. Agree the price beforehand, ask what is used, and skip it if you are unsure.
What you pay
A secondary source from August 2026 describes access to the village as free and guesthouse and meal services as paid. That is not an official fee schedule. Agree prices for house visits, meals and boat rides before you start, and ask what is included.
Photos and people
Ask before you photograph a person, a doorway or the inside of a house. A smile and a question are enough, and a no is a no.
Crocodiles in village houses
The facts, and what to do about them.
Press photos from March 2020 show small crocodiles kept in houses in Gharb Soheil, in cages, and shown to visitors for money. That report is old, and it does not show which house keeps animals today.
In July 2026 Egypt's environment agency described private crocodile keeping and illegal trade as a danger to people, animals and the environment. It says the natural populations live in Lake Nasser, not in the stretch of the Nile between Aswan and the delta. It did not say that every house in the village breaks the rules.
For you this means: do not touch, hold or feed the animals, and do not pay for photos with a crocodile in your arms. Do not read a display as proof that an animal is tame, safe or well kept. If you want to support a household, a meal or a stay is a better choice.
Nearby places
Sehel is an island village of its own, where local operators offer boat visits and old inscriptions, and houses with painted windows can be seen. Heisa is another inhabited Nubian island. Elephantine has the villages of Koti and Siou next to an archaeological site. For the history behind these communities, read about Nubian culture. If you travel on from Aswan to Luxor, the Luxor guide takes over.

Gharb Soheil: frequently asked questions
How do I get to Gharb Soheil from Aswan?
By boat it takes about 40 minutes upstream, according to a secondary source updated in August 2026. By road, an operator guide describes car or tuk-tuk access along the west bank. Confirm the pier or route with your host.
Is Gharb Soheil on the east or the west bank?
On the west bank, upstream from Aswan and opposite the island of Soheil.
Is it free to enter the village?
One secondary source describes village access as free and guesthouse and meal services as paid. That is not an official fee schedule, so do not assume that house visits or boat rides are free. Ask first.
Should I have my hand painted with henna?
It is a visitor service you may choose. Agree the price first and ask what is used. If you are not sure, you can say no.
Can I hold a crocodile?
You should not. The environment agency warns about private keeping and illegal trade, and handling a wild animal is risky for you and bad for the animal. See the section on crocodiles above.
Can I stay overnight?
Yes, guesthouses in the area offer rooms. Locations differ, and some are on islands, so check the exact address and how you get there. See where to stay.
