Where to stay in Aswan: the main choices

Aswan offers hotels on the mainland, Nubian guesthouses on the west bank and places to sleep on the Nile islands. The Nile separates them, so the choice affects every transfer, every boat and every late return.

This page compares locations, not quality. It gives no star ratings, no room prices and no claims about availability. A published property page tells you where a place is, not whether a room is free on your dates.

Aswan hotels and guesthouses by area

What published sources say about each location.

AreaWhere it isWhat to know
East bank and mainlandThe city side of the riverA transfer provider lists east bank hotels separately from west bank stays. A provider's Philae, High Dam and Obelisk day starts from the east bank, and a west bank pickup costs extra.
Gharb SoheilWest bank, upstream from Aswan, opposite the island of SoheilReached by boat or by road along the west bank, depending on the property. One operator gives its address as "Kiki Island, Gharb Soheil".
ElephantineInhabited island in the Nile opposite AswanA resort publishes its location on the island. The ruins are at the south end, and the villages of Koti and Siou are on the island.
HeisaInhabited Nubian islandA guesthouse operator names Heisa as its base. Do not assume the same transfers as on Elephantine.

The east bank and west bank are not ranked here for safety or quality. Compare the exact location and the transfer arrangement for each property.

Staying in a Nubian guesthouse

These are family homes and small lodgings, not a show.

Gharb Soheil

Guesthouse rooms and meals are offered in the village. One secondary source describes access to the village as free and guesthouse and meal services as paid. That is not an official fee notice, so ask the host what is included. More on the Gharb Soheil page.

Respect your hosts

Ask before you photograph people or their homes. Take meals and henna only if you want them, and agree on the price first. The villages have a history that is explained on the Nubian culture page.

Do not mix up the places

Gharb Soheil on the west bank is not the island village of Sehel and not Gharb Aswan north of the city. Check the address and the way in before you pay a deposit.

Elephantine and the islands

Elephantine is a living island and an archaeological area. A resort on the island publishes its location in the Nile. That confirms the position only, not the price or a ferry timetable.

The ministry site on the south tip charges EGP 200 for a foreign adult (2026), and it is open daily from 08:00 to 16:00. Staying on the island does not give you that entry. Read the Elephantine guide for the villages and the dig.

On the other island, Heisa, the operator describes its base and its food. A public ferry timetable and fare are not published, so ask your host how guests cross at night.

What to ask before you book

Details that published pages often leave out.

How do guests arrive?

Ask whether the host sends a boat, a car or a tuk-tuk, what it costs and where it meets you. One provider lists airport and station transfers separately for east bank hotels and west bank stays.

What happens in the evening?

Ask how you get back after dinner or after a late tour. Do not assume a public night ferry.

Air conditioning and noise

Summer highs average above 41 °C from June to August. Ask about cooling and the quietness of the room. See the weather page.

Stairs and access

Ask about steps, lanes and the walk from the landing or the road to your room if access matters to you.

What is included

Ask about taxes, service charges, breakfast and cancellation terms. Published pages do not give a general rule.

Where to stay in Aswan: frequently asked questions

Should I stay on the east bank or the west bank?

That depends on your plans. The east bank is the city side, and some day tours start there with an extra charge for a west bank pickup. The west bank suits a stay in Gharb Soheil. This guide does not rank the two.

Can I stay in a Nubian guesthouse?

Yes. Guesthouses are published in Gharb Soheil, and an operator names Heisa as its location. Check the exact address and the way in, because access differs by property.

Can I sleep on Elephantine?

A resort publishes its location on Elephantine in the Nile. Ask about transfers and the crossing before you book. The archaeological site is a separate ticket.

How far is Gharb Soheil from Aswan?

A secondary source gives about 40 minutes by boat upstream from Aswan. That is an estimate, not a timetable. A road route along the west bank exists, but the way in depends on the property.

Are crocodiles kept in guesthouses?

Photo reports from 2020 showed small crocodiles in houses and paid shows in Gharb Soheil. The national environment agency warns that private keeping and illegal trade harm people, animals and nature. It does not say every house acts illegally. Do not touch the animals.
